I've been Googling around trying to find out about this Aurora stuff and I came across another forum. I quote:
"Before fixing the problem, be sure to call the creators at Direct Revenue, LLC in New York to let them know how you feel about them causing so much anguish. Their phone number is 646-613-0376, and they are located at 107 Grand Street, 3rd Floor in Manhattan."
2005-07-28 14:13:27, Guest:
DO NOT - I repeat - DO NOT download mypctuneup...this is a program created by the same a**holes that created aurora. They give you the spyware, then tell you to download their program to remove it...but this program is spyware itself and puts a bug on your computer. For more info, google mpctuneup and go to any of the sites other than mypctuneup.com to find out more about this little trick.

2005-07-29 07:33:08, Guest:
Direct Revenue (aka-Aurora, ABI Network) people will NOT take your call. They make you leave a telephone number to call them back the next day. And yes, they are the same people that make the removal tool MyPCTuneUp.com. So, they infect your computer then make you spend money to remove and add other software at the same time! WHY IS THIS NOT ILLEGAL????
Please call them to fill up their voicemail system with your comments: 646-613-0376
2005-07-29 17:18:08, Guest:
This jerks need to be hauled into court and sued and make them pay every single person that had their computer infected by this stinking pile of sh*t
2005-07-30 17:40:23, Guest:
The way to combat this is to call the companies whose ads they run. Call Dell. Boycott these products. Bring law suits against the advertisers for paying fees to companies that take over out computers against our wills.
2005-07-31 02:02:42, Guest:
I agree, boycott their advertisers.
2005-07-31 09:47:42, Guest:
my votes for bycott, the time has come to say no to this unwanted exploitation
2005-07-31 13:18:53, Guest:
Bugger Windows, aurora an all the bloody rest. I'm using Linux!
2005-07-31 14:32:16, Guest:
I was told that you can find it in disgues under add/remove programs. You have to try to remove it from there or follow the steps for removal.

2005-08-01 23:09:53, Guest:
Someone with the skills and time needs to make on online BOYCOTT list of companies that advertise with Aurora that anyone who Googles Aurora would find. The only way to get off the boycott list would be if the company reps agreed to BOYCOTT Aurora. Then maybe this thing would go away.
2005-08-01 23:28:34, Guest:
I have started emailing the actual companies whose ads pop up through Aurora and telling them I will boycott their company until they publicly state that they are withdrawing ads from Aurora. Don't use the Aurora link to contact them -- look them up separately. Lets inundate those companies with emails telling them they are alienating their customers.
2005-08-02 12:26:01, Guest:
I just figured out how to get rid of Aurora. Basically you have to come up in safe mode with command prompt and delete Nail.exe or create a text file with the same name and overwrite it. then come up in safe mode and make sure you delete references to the dropper files in HKEY\LOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run. They will have random file names like xyyyke.exe. Then go to HKEY\LOCAL MACHINE\Software\ Windows NT\WINLOGON\ locate the Shell command in the right pane and delete the path and file name after Explorer.exe. It basically uses the Winlogon process, which spawns the shell (Explorer interface)to append the executable to Explorer. As a result you cannot kill it in any mode that calls Explorer i.e "safe mode" or "normal mode". Hope this helps someone else.

I already put a complaint with the FTC and everyone should:

there is new "Aurora" its called "Ceres" i get the pop ups on my comp saying "Ceres - part of the abi network" any info on this?
2005-08-03 07:05:04, Guest:
Everyone,
Please go to this address as mentioned before, and put in a complaint.
https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01
If everyone who is infected with this does so, the FTC can't ignore it. Boycott ABI's vendors. Kick them where it hurts, in their wallets. (They obviously have no balls!)
...and yes, the above steps will help to remove NAIL.EXE. ...but be on the lookout. It will come back. Remove NAIL.EXE from c:\windows while in safe mode, then go complete the remaining file, folder, and registry deletes accordingly.
Good Luck.
currently has 99,999 complaint emails headed their way was we speak. (GOD, I love email bombers.) I say, "hit 'em with their own shit!"
2005-08-03 09:01:46, Guest:
Ok, I hate this thing.. hate it hate it hate it. Is there ANY spyware out there to get rid of it? Cus I have NO CLUE how to do anything in the above direction for removal. I know how to start up in safe mode and thats it.
2005-08-03 12:03:04, Guest:
whee, check out that link on top 'get pestpatrol', it removed aurora completely :D
2005-08-03 13:02:08, Guest:

GAH! My poor computer is DYING because of this freaking Aurora thing! It's already got this shatty processor and DIAL UP internet! Now it's going 395083 times slower. Im gonna write these evil a-holes.
2005-08-04 05:14:28, Guest:
If what one of the chaps said is true in earlier posts, that they install this stupid adware, and then provide a service to remove it...it just so happens that you would have strong ground to stand on in a court case
2005-08-04 22:22:50, Guest:
If i cud, i'd have the owner or the CEO of ABI network stand naked in the middle of a desert or dead in the middle of northpoll w/out water or warm clothes for the rest of their lives...and maybe then i might say i got my revenge... these ****ers shud be hanged w/out any questions...
2005-08-05 06:22:44, druid628:
Ok as someone else stated, I am glad I'm not the only one who's been having trouble with this. I spent 3.25 hours last night trying to remove this crap from a client's laptop. This God-forsaken software is horrible. I had to create a batch file to remove the nail.exe file that deleted nail.exe 4 or 5 times and then renamed an empty txt file nail.exe and that seemed to work as for removing the nail.exe file. I too will be lodging a complaint with the FTC.
2005-08-05 07:05:13, Guest:
well ive just sent a e mail through to abetterinternet not that they will take any notice, but i also gave them the link to this forum for them to see just how bad people are pissed off with there adware
2005-08-05 10:59:51, Guest:
JOINING THE TEAM "KAPIABIN" Man, it's nice to know I'm not the only one dealing with this crap, I have spent the last week working on this, and just figured out how to get rid of it today! I am filing with the FTC and emailing them. Good luck everyone
2005-08-05 11:37:24, Guest:
you can type up threats and send them to the company in envelopes with the company address as the return address, so it wont cost for postage. i have mailed almost 200. just dont give yourself away because the postal service will hate you as much as you all hate aurora.
2005-08-05 17:29:36, Guest:
abi should be blown up=what a crappy company
2005-08-05 19:19:57, Guest:
I don't even know how I got Aurora, but now I can't get rid of it. I've spent hours trying. I'm going to try the safe-mode process. I'm so pissed off. DO NOT D/L FROM mypctuneup.com!!! I saw an earlier post that you should, and it has since been corrected, but just a reminder. And what else has worked for other people?
2005-08-05 23:27:37, Guest:
Send all Direct Revenue, ABI, ABetterInternet, employees to jail ('hard time') until the last PC is fixed.
2005-08-06 03:21:07, Guest:
I plan all spending a great deal of my time calling advertisers that I have used in the past.I will tell them I will no longer be using their products if they continue to advertise with ABI.
2005-08-06 03:30:11, Guest:
I do not know how I got this, but it is horrible. In an effort to remove this aurora from my employer laptop, I have lost some important data which belongs to my employer. This group must be punished and I hope FTC will handle them properly.
2005-08-06 22:48:39, Guest:
I agree that some form of punishment must come to ABI, and that boycotting products advertised under ABI, and flooding them with (e)mail, and contacting the FTC are good ideas. But that doesn't solve the immediate problem which is getting this off of our computers. (I've spent hours trying.)
The payload of this spyware virus is in the file nail.exe in your C drive, in the Windows folder. If you delete the file it regenerates, but if you open it and delete the encrypted code and save, that kills it.
Don't go to mypctuneup.com, it does not uninstall the virus but adds more spyware to your computer.
Overwriting the nail.exe file is only one in a series of steps to fixing your computer. I am not computer literate enough to do the rest, so if someone can help me finish killing this virus, it would be much appreciated.
Also I've learned most spyware/adware/virus protection programs (Norton, McAfee, AdAware, etc) do not solve this problem.
And does anyone know any specifics on Aurora (or ABI)? The things I know vary from person to person so I've mainly been able to form generalizations.
2005-08-07 14:40:15, Guest:
AHHHHHHHHH **** AURORA!!! i have a friend who has problems with aurora but when he turns on his computer an error about nail.exe comes up. I dont get an error so do i have nail.exe? im pretty sure i do but im not sure. anyone else have hundreds of aurora thngs and hour but no nail.exe warning? maybe something happenedto his computer... hmmm... anyway. *** AURORA *** MOTHER****ERS ****IN ********ES CANT ****IN DIE STUPID****ERS AHHHH!!!!
2005-08-07 20:33:45, Guest:
I'm working on a computer that won't even load into windows under a regular log in and will not run any programs worth while under safe mode. The only way I'm able to access the computer is through the command prompt mode of safe mode. While I thought DOS was fun at the time, it's been a good 10 years since I've tooled around. This sounds way beyond most users symptoms of pop ups, but I think aurora is intertwining itself with svchost and explorer, because under the task manager both of those processes use the processor like crazy. The comp can access the CD drive and I can make CD's, but other than that, it looks like a reinstall is necessary. Is there any other way to avoid this?
2005-08-09 13:39:15, Guest:
Before the elected apes in Washingtoon are allowed to regulate our "free speech" they should be required p**** laws to prosecute anyone that purposely writes or spreads malicious code, i.e. adware, spyware & viruses. Let the pot smokers out of prison and make room for these scumbags!

2005-08-10 01:27:06, Baybesf:
My computer is infected with this virus and I'm so happy to have found this forum. I am calling and writing to every advertiser on ABI to tell them what everyone else has said. I am not computer literate, so my computer is pretty much junked now..unless I bring it to a pro, which will cost a bundle. I downloaded NoAdware for 29.99 and it got rid of the MIRAR toolbar..but not Aurora. Does anyone else have "celebs on crack" and "joystick network", "imgiant" and a couple of other lame programs installed on thier desktop? ABI, Mirar and Joystick all downloaded themselves onto my computer at the same time. This so totally sucks! I called a florist who is advertising on joystick to tell him what I'd been through. The guy I spoke to is a manager, who said he'd speak with the owners..it's a start..I'm going to start looking for a lawyer..anyone with me?
2005-08-10 05:43:02, Guest:
I have the Aurora crap too--not very computer savvy though. I haven't seen nail.exe, but I get virus alerts and svcproc.exe gets sent to quarantine file. How do I get rid off this stuff?
2005-08-10 10:37:00, Guest:
I have read all the guests comments about Aurora ABI Network and i,m as pissed off as everyone else.Starting today i,m write down every company that advertises with those bastards and i e-mail them to say i,m boycotting their products, starting with Sears and Wallmart.Grrrrr
2005-08-10 22:49:12, Guest:
I've been in contact repeatedly with these Aurora/AbI people ever since it infected my computer. I'm a writer - and told them that I'm making a list of every company who advertises through them. I've also contacted every one of the companies whose ads pop up to tell them the same thing. The people I work for intend to publish this list - and I am recommending people boycott these companies.
So .. what's been the response? Neither ABI nor the companies care! Most don't respond at all. ABI gives the standard "You AGREED to let us onto your computer. YOU are the one ..." blah blah blah.
I told them that (1) if anything was "agreed" to on this computer, it wasn't meant to happen and (2) if they were honest about this 'agreement', they would put a huge red WARNING right at the top and state precisely what would happen should someone agree to allow Aurora on their computer.
No more comments from them.
The bottom line is this - ABI doesn't care. The companies advertising via ABI don't care either. Boycott now. Complain to everyone you can. Stuff like this HAS to be made illegal.
2005-08-11 09:53:17, Guest:
I have also been infected with this nasty adware thing. I've contacted Norton and they seem clueless how to help. I'm no PC giant but have invested a few hours already and I'm very annoyed to say the least. There has to be some laws devised to protect us from this. I don't usually get involved but this is so unjust I must.
2005-08-11 12:57:36, Guest:
Are there any lawyers out there who are interested in a class action lawsuit. It is a slam dunk win. I am out $500.00
2005-08-11 20:20:08, Guest:
Will PestPatrol remove Aurora???
2005-08-11 21:42:01, Guest:
yes dammit, quit asking the same question over and over
2005-08-12 00:53:48, Guest:
me again - if one of you would be willing to oversee this, I could setup a donation thing too so we can sue these assholes. Maybe a form where lawyers could submit bids as well? Just some thoughts.
p.s. if someone's already setup a site, then email me the link.
2005-08-12 07:03:06, Guest:
after doing some research I found out that these assholes recently received over $20 million in funding. They aren't going away anytime soon. It's a long shot, but I emailed Michael Moore (), and I encourage you guys to do so too. This company is Enron-Evil. I was even getting a search box coming up that was querying terms like "shit" and "Taylor Rain" (porn star). Hmmm...don't recall seeing a COPPA. Maybe that's because I don't remember seeing ANYTHING AT ALL!
2005-08-12 09:50:12, Guest:
i hope the abi building is hit if there's ever another terrorist attack.. bunch of assholes.. I'll be adding my complaint to all above mentioned persons/companies and more than willing to add my support in bringing these moralless assholes to the ground.
2005-08-12 10:00:21, Guest:
i'm a computer tech and have delt with this kind of stuff all the time. been 4 hours for me trying all sorts of tricks.
create a nail.txt, delete nail.exe and rename nail.txt to nail.exe -quickly. this seem to disable it so you can start removing the registry keys listed at the top of this page without them being recreated. hopes this helps.
btw, thanks for the help from everyone here :-)
2005-08-12 10:19:36, Guest:
Wow, clearly I'm not the only one having issues with these aurora people. May the flees of a thousand camels infest their pubic hairs.

2005-08-12 14:40:16, mel:
What the ****!? I've had this goddamned spyware on my computer for what seems to be 6 months. Who the **** would want to take someone's computer and make a mockery out if it like YOU did to mine!?
What the hell is there to prove!? Is this FUN to you!?
Why the goddamn hell would you want to give someone spyware and place all sorts of nasy viruses into their computer only so we have to take our hard warned money out of OUR own pockets only to take our hard drive to some company just to get it fixed and sometimes replaced.
If you have any apologies or hate mail of whats so ever feel free to email me: .
See you in cort.

I am driving to NYC and finding the CEO of ABI and I am going to kick him in the balls as hard as I can!!!! If it is a female CEO, she will be on the receiving end of the worlds hardest and longest titti twister! **** ABI...I am in D.C. so you know I can't do shit from here.
2005-08-17 09:19:41, Guest:
It seems as though it screwed up some of my messangers too. Yahoo is not working and Aol is hanging from a string. Is there a connection..?
Abi network shall personally have there balls removed as soon as I can go to NY (Might take several years so be patient you damn idiots.)
2005-08-18 15:21:06, Lou:
I used SpyHunter to get rid of my nail.exe error message...rebooted and didn't get the message again!!
2005-08-22 13:40:51, Zydane:
Me and my cousin spent days trying to figure out how to get rid of this adware, it drove me and him insane. The ABI company isn't gonna listen to you though, because of all these ads, they're making thousands or millions of dollars so they don't even care what you say.
2005-08-23 15:15:47, Jean:
I was told I have aurora because I downloaded something from them. Like I gave them permission to give me a stroke. Everytime I look at home loans they give me two or three IN FRONT no less of their contacts. I see I am not alone (thank the lord)and I feel your pain as it is my own. I guess it is good to get it out of your system (no pun intended)by writing about it. I do agree very seriously that a law suit against this and the company's they represent is a good idea. Maybe it won't help right away but they have to know there are a great deal of us who feel the same. It's going to cost $30 to get rid of this crap. It will only delete it for that moment but then the buried executable will rewrite it as soon as it searches for the program again. UGH!

there has been a great offering of exactly how to get rid of this in a few operating systems and a big thanks to those that have put it together. Does anyone have the same for Win98-second edition? when I look thru the instructions provided so far, the files indicated are not on my machine at the locations shown. Win98-2nd ed. is a little different. Thanks in advance

I have spent the last month trying to get the aurora off my system. Thanks to everyone on line, Finally got it off. Still have some Sear-ch pop up that is annoying me.
I called the attorney about the law suit against ABI direct revenue. They are still collecting information for other states. I live in California. I suggest everyone email him so we can stop this from continuing.
You can even call. His paralegal is helpful if he is unavailable.

Hey all was fixing a computer with this program on it and found an interesting registry technique.
It is putting an entry in the shell key.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon
"shell" = "explorer.exe nail.exe"
Edit it and remove the nail.exe part of it.
Hope it helps. =)

Has anyone actually PUBLISHED a list of ABI advertisers, with or without contact information? It seems to me that if we organized and spread the news via email we could get some recognition from the media and put pressure on this company to "cease and desist" their harassment of all of us. Afterall, people send me petitions to sign all the time. I would happily email everyone in my contacts list and request them to contact and boycott ABI advertisers.

I have filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commision against Direct Revenue, LLC. Everyone, please do the same. I will also seek legal assistant and will post the status soon.

these adware / malware are basically against the laws in many states and federal laws, since they
modify the registry, as the law of many states and states and federal law prohibit changing altering the registery or the way the computer functions, it may be described as trespassing with out permission and the such..these should be reported to your state attorney Generals office, the U.S.attorney generals office,F.T.C. and any state that wiil take such reports and complaints.. as New York and Washington state, (which has it's own laws for such situations
2005-09-21 18:19:58, redwingmick:
I hate to say it, but they are probably safe from lawsuits and the trespassing claims, because there is that quickie pop up that says "Do you want this, Yes or No?" and we ALL click yes because we don't realize the poison that it brings with it.

I also have this garbage on my computer and DH is trying like crazy to get rid of it. Is there any guaranteed program or method to get rid of it. We are on a fixed income and can't afford to pay a lot of money to try and find just the right one that will work. Also, it seems like we need to get the news media involved in revealing to the public about ABI-its tatics-its advertisers and most of all its removal program that you must buy to get rid of its virus. Let's shine the clean light of day on this companys shoddy and disceptive business practices. Just imagine the flood of complaints that would come flooding into the FTC,Senators,Congressman,State DA's and other responsible entities once people realize that they have been taken advantaged of and damaged and are not alone.

The problem is as soon as windows starts it launches nail.exe, aurora.exe, etc. and trying to delete these while windows is running is worthless, as many of you have experienced. If you have access to another computer, pull your hard drive out, run it as a slave drive in the other computer. This will give you access to these files without Windows launching them. Delete nail.exe and all associated exes and dlls. Put the drive back in the original computer and run Hijack this and check the boxes with anything associated with aurora and delete them. Run Regedit and remove the entries listed at the top of this page. If you want, run something like SpyHunter after, it will have a much easier time getting rid of anything left. This will not infect the computer you you are putting your drive into. Windows is not launching the exes or dlls, they are benign.
I have done this many times with success every time and it is so much easier then fighting with aurora on the original system.
2005-10-22 12:55:49, Guest:
removing aurora is a bit easier than you explained digitalentropy, you don't have to remove your hard drive in order to get rid of aurora, simply reboot in safemode and nail.exe, aurora.exe won't be loaded.

Rebooting into safe mode and removing nail.exe does not remove it, check your computer the next day or an hour later and it regenerates its self, it was coded to do such. Nail.exe has allot more to it than sees the eye, there are allot of other files installed with this so you cant remove it easily, I am currently working on a laptop infected with this junk, and I can honestly say i have never in my life came across such an aggressive and iterating peace of shitware in my life, there should be some sort of law suite and we should be doing it, we should take this company apart.

Guest 10-25-2005,
I'm having the same issue, but what's scary and frustrating about this is this client has had MS Antispyware running in autoprotect mode religiously since August 1st and it STILL got on there. I cannot delete nail.exe, even booting on a floppy and doing it manually from DOS prompt deletes it long enough for it to regenerate when Windows 2000 boots up in normal mode. I'm at a loss as what to do now except wipe the machine and start over...

I have a question- I am not infected with Aurora but I am infected with Win Fixer.
I am not too familiar with spyware, but do companies buy this information from Aurora for their internet ads? In that case, could these other companies be held legally liable also? If you could pursue legal action against these companies, they would not buy this info from spyware crooks. That would be the end of spyware. I am going to send a letter to my state senator about this.

Grrr..I hate Aurora! I had a problem with low virtual memory thanks to these idiots and my computer couldn't do anything. The Geek Squad obviously didnt know about the nail.exe file thingy because he thought he "turned off" the spyware while I was there. I guess I'm going back with a printout of this page since I have no clue how to do any of the tips that were suggested. Don't the advertisers realize this does them more harm than good????

i think i had the same thing on my comp but i didnt let it get as far as the pop ups etc instead i pulled the plug on internet and tried to use the anti spy, ad, virus but nothing would work!! my firewall shut down and wouldnt startup again eventually i went through regedit and deleted files but obviously missed something because the problems stayed so i ended up doing a complete format of the hard drives and starting from scratch i think it was this adwar, it came up with 2 files trying to access the internet one which was something like aafgbb and the other jykwiaa as well as loading scripts etc but they were the only 2 i could remember, does any one know if i can send it back to them as i saved it on to a disk.

What would happen if the individuals who are personally responsible and have profited from this were identified. Seems to me that if some personal information were to be published, the individuals who are responsible for this would have something to think about. Lets make it personal! Anybody know any names. These are real people with real addresses. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if us folks knew exactly who they were. Lets stop whining and do something. By the way, where is that advertisers list?
2006-04-19 11:24:39, Guest:
...just some info for all who are having problems with this shit, ABI/Direct Revenue settled a Class-Action Suit in Illinois recently. It involved their POS software that installs itself without the user's consent. They are required to change their practices according to the stipulations of the suit. Any software of this nature must be removable by the average computer user. Also, the user must offer consent in order for the software to install itself. Unfortunately, the ruling in this suit only cost ABI/DR $300,000 in attorney's fees which is pocket change compared to the millions they make off their bullshit adware/spyware.
