Limewire is a peer to peer network client used mainly exchange music files. It could consume a lot of network bandwidth & take over huge amounts of storage. Being free software, Limewire is distributed with many spyware, adware and other malicious programs, that pay Lime Wire LLC for being distributed in bundle with this peer to peer software.
Limewire description by publisher:
Lime Wire LLC is dedicated to building advanced file-sharing client/server software which will connect computing devices over public & private networks. Our team of developers hails from some of the world´s most highly-regarded academic & professional institutions, such as MIT, Columbia, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, CIBC Oppenheimer, & Compaq. Lime Wire LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Lime Group, a technology incubator based in downtown New York City. Lime Wire LLC, a New York based Limited Liability Company, was founded in August, 2000. Lime Wire was founded to develop technologies to develop & profit from the formation of worldwide peer-to-peer networks across the internet. At current, Lime Wire has the world´s largest team of developers building programs for the Gnutella network. Lime Wire´s 1st product, a software package named LimeWire, is a powerful & scalable serverless networking software that enables entities on the internet to share, search for, & obtain any file through the Gnutella Network. LimeWire has already achieved considerable popularity, having been downloaded more than 3,000,000 times as of 5/30/01, including 250,000 downloads during the week of May 19-25. A latest PC Pitstop study shows that Lime Wire resides on over 1.5% of PCs worldwide. The LimeWire software was designed to be free to individual users, in order to accelerate the growth of the network as a whole & introduce people to the power of peer-to-peer networks. Although LimeWire currently is being used mainly for file-sharing, LimeWire has the potential to become an informational utility with capabilities beyond those currently existing on the Internet, such as the World Wide Web. Content-serving entities on a peer-to-peer network will be able to respond to queries with dynamically generated, real-time information. Search requestors will be able to query & draw data directly from one or more databases, without having to navigate via several bulky web interfaces. Search requestors will also be able to communicate with multiple computers simultaneously, & preselect the type & form of information they´ll receive in response to their requests. Lime Wire is already building the technologies to communicate over peer-to-peer networks though structured metadata queries, transcending the text-based search capabilities of the World Wide Web & the current Gnutella network.

Lime wire like anything else that is free on the net runs a large risk of infecting your system, I've been there. STAY AWAY!!!
2006-04-05 08:37:34, Guest:
Unnecessary Limewire-bashing here, it is a very good P2P-program, just use ordinary pc-precaution besides (anti-virus, firewall, anti-spyware etc) and all will be well!
2006-04-11 14:55:44, Guest:
i have removed limewire but it keeps on popping up saying limewire launch error how do i get rid of that ????????
2006-04-18 03:45:37, Guest:
I advise anyone who wants to install a P2P program like limewire or kazar on their computer to be prepared to re-install their o/s on a monthly basis. Programs like limewire are free for a reason, they slow your pc down by filling it with spyware and malware. It can also kill your Task Manager and prevent access to the regedit command to remove it. Recommendation: only use this software on a 'sacrificial' system that you dont mind having to re-install.

Back in the day when limewire wasnt so popular, there wasnt as many problems with viruses and such, now it is widely used and ppl are careless what they download from it. after uninstalling limewire, i checked my regedit, and found none of the above registry entries... my comp is running as good as it ever has, and i have never had to reformat it, i guess i am just lucky?? or smart with keeping virus databases up to date and being cautious of bogus files.

Can limewire really be as bad as you guys are saying it is? On the limewire homepage it says that it DOES NOT HAVE ANY SPYWARE OR ADWARE on it ,but for some reason I tend to think that they are lying. Could a worldwide company such as Limewire, LLC really openly lie to the public? I had Limewire on my laptop for a long time and downloaded lots of large movie files, lots of mp3s, and a few months ago my computer started getting really really slow. It also kept popping up strange DIALOG BOXES that I did a little research on google with and according to what I found they were Trojans. From what I can understand the only way my computer is open to anyone hacking was through Limewire. Around the same time that my computer started getting extremely slow, I also noticed a couple other things.. Several programs would just close for no apparent reason, and another thing that I noticed was that my FIREWALL SETTINGS were DISABLED. I DID NOT DISABLE THEM myself. I have no idea how that got changed, and the option buttons where I should have been able to change them were grayed out and I couldn't change anything on them. Apparently this is a 3rd party firewall something..forget what it's called. Well, I just reimaged my laptop (reformatting the hard drive) and now my laptop runs ultra fast, and smooth. I haven't had any problems at all whatsoever now without Limewire. Yeah I liked all the great mp3s I got from there, yeah I liked movies, but I don't like getting viruses, trojans, worms, malware, and having to reimage my computer. I also don't want some music companies or publishers to come after me for downloading copyrighted songs that are not meant to be shared for free. My recommendation to anyone who enjoys downloading music like I do is TO NOT DOWNLOAD LIMEWIRE (I had the paid version because I thought it would download faster and maybe had less of a chance of getting a virus, but I was wrong). I would suggest doing lots of research on the best available Peer to Peer file-sharing programs out there before you download something that may ultimately take up your time, money, and ruin your computer. My friend from school said her computer completely shut down and she took it to a computer tech store and the guy told her that it contained 30 trojan viruses on it and that they all were from Limewire. Limewire is bad bad bad.

I have attempted to completely remove limwire from my computer and I deleted all the folders that I could find, however, when I go to msconfig and look up my start up options, limewire on startup is still there. How do I remove it completely from the harddrive?
2007-06-04 16:42:32, Guest:
I'm glad I uninstalled Limewire before it cause big problems. I used to download from Limewire, but I got aware that it can send virus to my computer, for people that just downloaded Limewire, please be aware that the downloads can send viruses to your computer, so its better if you uninstall it or don't install it at all. But I'm just saying this so if someone reads it they will be aware of it. Also like somebody said it doesn't have spyware protection, either adware protection, i'm just saying that don't download Limewire unless you wanna get a virus, and end up messing up your computer.

To remove the program from your computer almost completely, you've got to restart your computer up in safe mode so that it isn't still "connected." But after doing so, a window ma continue to pop up at start up. I'm unsure of how to remove that. Though it seems that if you install a decent amount of anti-virus and anti-spyware, LimeWire should cause no problems at all. Just be sure to not to click on the sites that some "songs" pop up with.

blah blah blah.
I'm going crazy because it doesn't go away. just keeps popping up and up and up.
I've tried uninstalling everything that says limewire and it says its running. its not under my add/remove programs.
I'm not sure what this is but I'm about to lose it by looking at it pop up constantly.
I'm not good with computers. My sister gave me her old one.
can someone give clear, super- simple directions on how to get rid of this? I'd be eternally grateful!

I HATE limewire.
I don't care what anybody says - I NEVER download anything and last night I decided (at the advice of my sister) to try limewire. BIG MISTAKE. I have had to uninstall and remove Internet Explorer and now I am using Mozilla Firefox. It has taken me ALL day long to get my computer un-screwed. I deleted the stupid limewire files but like everyone else, I got the 'launch error' every two seconds! It was installed in FOUR places on my computer. I had to disable my internet connection to remove the nasty proggie and it was a horrible, long process.
It is NOT worth the hassle, believe me. You don't need anything bad enough to sacrifice your operating system and computer!

You must also delete these files from your computer.
1. Go to My Computer
2. Click on Local Disk (C:)
3. Click on Program Files folder
4. from there you'll delete the following files. You computer should be better after that.
Program Files\Common Files\limewire
Program Files\limeshop
Program Files\limewire
If it says you can't delete it because it is being used, go to Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and click on the tab named processes. Then look for limewire or frostwire, click on it once(select it) and click button where it says [End Process] As soon as you do this delete the files from Local Disk (C:) *the directions are at the top* But do this pretty fast because as soon as you End the Process, it will start again *what a pain >:(* If this doesn't work try and get any spyware program.

I want to get rid of Limewire as thru it I badly infected my computer.
I see the list of files to remove.
But I can't find them anywhere on my computer nor do I know how to remove them if I could.
Besides that Limewire DOES NOT EVEN APPEAR IN MY ALL PROGRAMS LIST.
I notice above all that Limewire offers no support or contact at all about these problems. Is this their punishment for using the free basic service?
Who are these Limewire people who take no responsibiilty for the havoc they engender?

Everytime i try to go delete the rest of my Limewire folders, (its uninstalled) it ends my Explorer (not IE) and makes my desktop reset itself, how do i get rid of this problem?? everything listed in the post at the top in my REGEDIT is gone, so im not sure WHAT is causing this problem or why but help would be awsome!

My computer keeps randomly crashing. Could this problem be Limewire related? (I deleted every file I could find that was related to it...)

I would also search the registry for anything titled "limewire" and delete it. First make sure you back up your registry. :)

make sure you dont download files which have a filesize: smaller than 1mb, 3462kb, 5611kb or if they have suspicious filenames, enormous availability etc.
or just try eMule, it is completely free of malware and spyware. pretty fast too if you tweak it up a little bit. :)

no joke, limewire disables my task manager, disables my restart, and stops all internet connectivity. If you don't have limewire, don't get it, and if you do have it, delete it! It will only cause anger and frustration!

Thanks for all the valuable comments. I have not yet installed lime wire . We have a new laptop that my daughter would like to install limewire on. It is running Vista with current virus and firewall protection. My question is would installing Limewire on a external hard drive or thumb drive be better ? And would this also make it easier to remove if needed ? Thanks in advance .

Thanks so much for the info. The last post instructions seem to have worked
2009-06-07 10:14:58, Guest:
I was ready to throw it out the window, I was so frustrated. I could not get rid of the limewire or frostwire no matter what I did. The way I went about it was to do a hard reboot(just shutting it down w/o going to the start menu). When it comes up, I always run the safe mode with networking and then go to the command prompt. I run Vista, which is a complete other issue for me, but it works the same and I went back to the main drive and started from there. Once you get to the limewire directory, type in del *.* and then the computer will ask you if you are sure, type Y and hit enter. After getting the next line, make sure that the directory is clear by typing dir. The directory should be listed as being clear. For a better idea of the way I did it:
c:\users\owner>cd ..(type this)
c:\users>cd ..
c:\>cd program files
c:\program files>cd limewire
This will give you your directory and how much space is being used on your computer
c:\program files\limewire>del *.*
c:\program files\limewire\*.*, Are you sure(Y/N)?Y
c:\program files\limewire>dir
This should show you the directory as being empty.
This was just done about 10 minutes ago, before I did any physical damage to my computer...which was in the very near future.
Hope this helps

Limewire is based on Java programming so it can only be as secure as it's platform (java). For Limewire to be secure you need to have not only the latest version of Limewire but ALSO the latest Java updates. Java has had, (maybe still has) many security holes and Limewire has many floors but I suspect 99.9% of you that have had malware, viruses, spyware, got it from downloading and Launching the malware YOURSELF!!!
This will come as a shock to most of you that have posted here but, the virus programmers don't call their malicious files "BAD VIRUS.exe", or "SPYWARE TROJAN.exe"......They'll call it "Lady GaGa_Poker Face.mp3" and/or every other popular song or film. This way when somebody searches for "Lady GaGa", for example, the virus file will show up in the results, normally near the top. It takes YOU to start the download and then YOU to 'launch' the downloaded file. Remember the odd mp3 or video clip you downloaded that wouldn't play???...yep you've guessed it, it's because it really wasn't an mp3, but some malicious code who's purpose is to disable or modify your security/firewall so that it can connect to the internet and download many more viruses. The first of which will attempt to kill your security altogether giving the virus programmers (organised crime, 'geeky' kids, or even the authorities) total control over your system.
NEVER launch a file from within Limewire. Instead go to the downloads folder (right click file and click 'open file location'). Then SCAN THE FILE OR BETTER STILL THE WHOLE DOWNLOAD FOLDER.
This is EXACTLY what you should do with EVERY file you download from the internet whether it's via Limewire or not.
You can see some of the malware files simply by searching for: "kjhbsuhsvkrn" or any other random string of letters. The search results will find: "kjhbsuhsvkrn_320kb.mp3". Note down the size's of of files, then search for another random string of letters. Note the files sizes. You'll notice the same repeating file sizes, because really it's the same malicious file that somehow reads the incoming search term and pretends to be that search term. It even puts "320kbps.mp3" on the end to encourage you to click the "quality" rip.

I had Limewire installed in my computer also, what a BIG MISTAKE! I just uninstalled it using the control panel after realizing Limewire must be the backdoor for intruders. Then I manually removed any leftover folders related to Limewire. ONLY manually remove folder(s) AFTER you uninstalled Limewire using the control panel FIRST, otherwise you wont be able to delete ALL the files that are in Other folders that are 'related' to the Limewire folder. If you try to delete each folder individually, you may get an error message saying a .dll file is missing. Then your stuck with that corrupt folder for life, unless you reinstall a new operating system, and who's going to do that eveytime there computer is attacked.
I'm not sure who the culprit is, but this spyware or malware (malicious software) uses my MSN sign-in page to take over my 'Administrative' duties, and uses the 'Guest Account'(a suitcase will appear). The attacker tries to coax you into accidentally typing in your user password in the 'Guest Account' on the MSN sign-in page. This happens often. (DONT EVER TYPE THAT PASSWORD), if you accidently do, the attacker becomes the Administrator of your computer, and has complete control over your entire computer and will disable your system restore, and invade your privacy, freeze software programs your using and media players, close webpages while your reading or playing a game, your MSN homepage will change before your very eyes for a brief second, annoying popups will suddenly appear out of the blue to haunt you (some redirecting you to the hackers website) and slowing your computer down like a snail climbing uphill against the tide. The other thing is NEVER check the 'Remember password' box to save it. The attacker will be able to attain that saved password and use it over and over again even if you delete it from the 'Guest Account' because its hidden in a file (malicious code) every time you restart your computer. The only way to prevent the attacker from using your password is to uncheck the 'remember password' box and highlight and delete the password typed in by the attacker who is using the MSN 'Guest Account' FIRST, then after you have done that, then uncheck yours and any other family members 'user account' passwords that are saved,(be sure to check with your family members first to see if they know their password by heart or wrote it down somewhere), then delete the typed in password. Next, on the MSN sign-in page, at the very top of page click on the 'forgot password'. Create a new one, write it down somewhere. DONT EVER CHECK THE 'Remember Password' BOX. Otherwise the attacker will attain your new password you just create havoc all over again. This intruder is most likely arrive through a file sharing program. Limewire shares music files and video files and invites intruders, viruses, worms, malware, spyware, hidden rootkits and the like to destroy your computer and invade your privacy. And that goes for any other file sharing program out there. Bottom line, viruses will hitch a ride with downloads and drivebyes. Make sure you have an Anti-spyware and Anti-Malware software program to find these plagues and destroy them before they destroy you.

before wiping lime wire from your hard drive be sure to back every thing up.
